"I am very much indebted to you, Sir.. I feel as though the Almighty has come up in your form to assist me at this juncture", Ram said with a bow to the doctor, as Vani was watching in awe.

Vani was the chief nurse of that private hospital, owned by Dr. Prakash. She assisted her husband in his business.

Ram's wife had been admitted to their hospital five days back with mild labour pain. They had paid a minimal advance of 20,000 rupees (around 300 USD), as a normal delivery was anticipated. Due to sudden complications, the doctor resorted to Caeserian delivery, which led to a shoot up of expenses, with the expected expense now being more than 100,000 rupees (1,500 USD), which was an amount Ramesh could never afford at all, atleast in near future. Hence, Ramesh came up to the doctor and conveyed his inability to settle the hospital bills with tears in his eyes.

Ramesh was dumbfounded, as he heard Dr. Prakash say, "Oh sir.. come on.. don't worry about money now. You could settle the bills later, may be in installment. First, have her discharged and take her home. We could discuss the bills later".

The first paragraph of this story was uttered by Ramesh to Dr. Prakash in reply to this.

That night, as they lay on bed, Vani cuddled Prakash, as she uttered in a slow voice, “Dear... I never knew you were such a noble human. At times, I have thought you are hard hearted, when you were very strict on bills. But today, my heart melted as I saw you discharging Ramesh's wife without them even settling the basic bills. I still can't believe you were so humane. “

Prakash replied in an annoyed tone, “Stupid... Am I an idiot to give up a lakh rupees. It was all the blunder of nurse Rama who you appointed recently. I told her to give medicine for diarrhea before labor. She misunderstood it and gave medicine to stop diarrhea instead of inducing it, which resulted in further complications for the lady. I was overstressed till the baby could be delivered safe. I just wanted to get rid of her from the hospital, so that our reputation is not harmed, in case the mistake is discovered. I was relieved only after he signed all safe discharge declaration forms. The first job tomorrow morning would be to fire Rama from her employment at our hospital”

Vani was speechless as she stared at Prakash with a blank look.
